From minimoto to motogp racing

I can remember it like it was yesterday.

It was a New Era MCC club meeting at Cadwell Park. Sunny, August weekend in 1998. Park Corner, at the end of the back straight, on my first race bike - a 1991 FZR400RRSP. No. 49 of 100 official imports by Yamaha UK.

The noise of my slider touching down took me by surprise....I thought I was crashing.

I was so excited after the race, showing off the tiny scrape on my virginal yellow Texport knee slider (told you I remembered it well) to my girlfriend at the time, Mhairi. Jumping for joy I insisted she go immediately to Park Corner - a long walk from the Cadwell Paddock - to take pictures in the next race.

I was 26 years old at the time.

Last night, my 7 yr old nephew Finley popped his knee down cherry at Surrey Minimoto clubs Wednesday night practice sessions. Straight into the pits jumping for joy yelling "I got my knee down" and pointing at the similarly tiny (smaller actually...haha) scrape on his right knee slider.

The little bugger.
